Fresh air, fresh flowers, fresh looks. Spring is the perfect time to refresh your style. Our team of Designers spent the Winter getting ready with new techniques and inspiration for the season. Aveda Hair Cutting Educator and Mango’s Director of Education, Hauns Korpela kicked things off in 2023 by inspiring our team with new hair on three models. His demonstrated cuts, color and styling on short, medium and long hair. All involved lots of texture, movement, and incredible shape. They were styled with polmades and pastes to give them modern, lived in volume.
Hauns describes changes in the hair trends for Spring: “We are seeing a lot of shagging out of cuts to create texture and that texture is then enhanced by a bit of bold color or highlights that maximum the movement and interest of the hair. In some of these cuts, weight is being removed to create shape that mimics the exaggerated shapes we saw with apparel on the runway during Fashion Week.”
Our team learned new variations of the Mixie (mullet/pixie) and the Butterfly cut in a Tik Tok Trend Haircutting class taught by Aveda Haircutting Purefessional Susan Ford. Both cuts have lots of layers.
Butterfly- The Butterfly cut is a style for long hair that has shorter layers around the crown of the head, falling about 3” below the chin. A series of feather layers are styled away from the face, giving this cut a 70’s vibe and lots of options for styling and pulling the hair up. This cut works best with wavy or curly hair.
Mixie- Is an edgy look that is short on the front and sides and longer in the back. It has lots of texture and compared to the Bixie haircut, this cut usually has shorter bangs and is longer in the back. It should be customized to accentuate the shape of the face.
Effortless Bobs-Overall, the Bobs we are seeing for Spring are shorter—cheekbone skimming, jaw length, or just slightly below the jaw. Again, these cuts have either a 70’s or 90’s throwback vibe, they are a mixture of modern and vintage, with some texture combined with a blunt outline shape.
Cheeky Bob– It is the most dramatic and short Bob, with length skimming the cheekbones. It can have bangs or a deep side part for a 90’s throwback look. It is following the lived-in trend by being styled with loose curls for texture.
Chopped Bob– An extension of the Bixie trend, this cut features a blunt bob cut that is longer than chin length and is layered and chopped into. It is easy to style and has lots of movement.
J-OB– The jaw length bob that has a blunt shape that is often cut with a razor. It can be styled straight or with texture.
French Bob– A variation of the chin length bob that works with or without bangs and is great on curly hair because its shape looks good when filled with the volume and
movement of curly hair.
Change is also in the air for traditionally popular men’s cuts. The new cuts we are seeing involve longer lengths with more scissor technique and less clipper shaping.
According to Hauns, “Mens’ cuts are moving a bit more gender neutral with longer lengths and a style that is also a bit shaggier and textured. It’s 90’s grunge with more polish. Like an adult version of the Justin Bieber, but with a heavier fringe. We are not seeing as much of the sharp fades with overly long tops that have been popular for the past several years.”
There is lots of inspiration on social media. Type in hashtags for Mixie and Butterfly on Instagram or search on Tik Tok to see photos and variations of these cuts. Visit a Mango Designer to find the best look for you this Spring!
